In the World of Tea
Matcha is shade-grown green tea, stone-ground to a powder fine as talc, whisked rather than steeped: you drink the whole leaf. Zen monks brought it from China to Japan in the twelfth century, and around it grew chanoyu, the tea ceremony, where preparing a single bowl becomes a meditation. The modern latte softens matcha's grassy intensity with steamed milk, but the ritual heart remains: whisk, breathe, sip.
