The Poinsettia
The plant came first. Joel Roberts Poinsett, the first United States minister to Mexico and a Charleston native, sent cuttings of the red-leafed shrub home to South Carolina in the 1820s, and it has carried his name ever since. The cocktail is a much younger tradition: a holiday sparkler that borrows the plant's red and green, built on cranberry, orange liqueur, and a splash of something bubbly. It is the drink to have in hand when the door opens and the cold comes in with the guests.
The Poinsettia, serves 1
- 1 oz cranberry juice
- 1/2 oz orange liqueur (Cointreau or Grand Marnier)
- 4 oz chilled sparkling wine
- Orange twist and a few fresh cranberries
Pour the cranberry juice and orange liqueur into a chilled flute. Top slowly with sparkling wine and garnish with the twist and cranberries. For a party, multiply by eight and build it in a pitcher, adding the sparkling wine just before serving.
