The Dirty Martini
The martini is the king of cocktails, and going dirty is its most devoted heresy: a spoonful of olive brine first slipped into the glass around 1901, allegedly for President Franklin Roosevelt's table decades later, softening gin's austerity into something savory and saline.
You'll need:
2.5 oz gin (or vodka)
0.5 oz dry vermouth
0.5 oz olive brine, to taste
Stir with plenty of ice until frost blooms on the mixing glass, strain into a chilled martini glass, and garnish with three good olives. Stirred, not shaken, whatever the movies say.
